Centre for the Study of Teacher Education

The Mission of the Centre

There have been different aims and activities undertaken by earlier directors of the Centre. Upon appointment to the position as Director of the Centre, Gaalen Erickson identified three broad purposes which he intended to pursue:
to increase the Faculty's research and development activities in the area of teacher education;

to develop programmatic research into specific areas of teacher education so as to provide a general focus and purpose to the research interests of individual faculty members, graduate students, and teachers/administrators in field settings;

to provide a forum for faculty members, graduate students, and field personnel to discuss research, issues, and policies in the field of teacher education.

In a review of all of the Centres in the Faculty and other administrative units in 1995, a Faculty committee (called the "4th Committee on Reorganization") reaffirmed these aims of the Centre as they described the mandate of CSTE as follows:

to increase the Faculty's research and development activities in the area of teacher education; to develop programmatic research into specific areas of teacher education that would provide some general focus and purpose to the research interests of individual faculty members and graduate students; and to provide a forum for Faculty members, graduate students, and field personnel to discuss research, issues, and policies in the area of teacher education.

These general aims, then, represent the most succinct statement of the Mission of the Centre that still guides most of the activities of the Centre personnel.
